HOW DO I RUN THE EVAL VERSION ON SEPARATE COMPUTERS?
http://rbsdrive.com/rbstech/TS100128.HTM

Article Number: 100128
Software: EVALUATION VERSION Version ALL

The Evaluation Version comes in a package that installs both client and server on the same computer by default. We did it that way to let you test the basic functionality quickly, to avoid the need to install on two computers.

These instructions detail how to install the Client software on a separate computer from your Server.

The best way to test a Client on another computer is to create a Client installation, customized with your Server's IP address, copy it to a CD and install it on another computer. This is how many Service Providers distribute their Client software, ready to run.

However, you may have already tried to install the Client software and can't make it log into the server because you skipped a step or two, so I'll also show you the "quick" way to fix an existing Client installation.

The first thing to do in all cases is to install the RBS Evaluation Software on the computer you want to test as an RBS Server. This will install both the Server and a Client on the same computer, then it will run both the Client and the Server and display a lot of documentation which you should read.

It also creates a folder called /Client/ which contains an un-customized Client installer which doesn't yet know how to reach your RBS Server. It's a common mistake to use that installer, without customization, to install a test client. The test Client then cannot log into the RBS Server.

The RIGHT Way - Customize the Client installer BEFORE using it to install a Client.

The QUICK Way - If you've already installed a test Client that doesn't contact the Server, here's how to fix it.

About IP Addresses - What's an IP address?

Test Your Server - If you still can't connect...

The Right Way

Exit the Remote Backup client software that is running on your test RBS Server. Make sure that the Remote Backup client software is not running in your System Tray. If it is, right-click on its icon and select Close.

Leave the RBS Server running.

Open the RBS Manager.

Select Tools then Client Database Utility

Change the RBS Server IP Address to the IP address of the computer running your demo RBS Server. Then click Apply and answer Yes to any questions, then click OK.

Notes About IP Addresses

Every computer on the Internet has an IP address, a number that tells other computers how to find it. Your Remote Backup client software needs to know how to find its Server, so it uses the Server's IP address. Here's an example of an IP address:

216.37.76.90

Computers can also be found on the Internet by their Host Name, which is a unique name you can give a computer that's easier to remember than an IP address. Domain names are host names. Here are two examples of host names:

remote-backup.com
rbs1.rbsamerica.com

In the Remote Backup software you can use IP addresses and Host Names interchangeably. Host names must be assigned by a Domain Name authority.

When you purchase your RBS Software, Remote Backup Systems, Inc. will assign your RBS Server a Host Name so you can use your RBS Server with a dynamic IP address (one that might change between logins).

The IP address you enter into the Client Database Utility must be accessible by the computer on which you want to test the Remote Backup Client. If it isn't, the Client will not be able to communicate with the Server.

If your evaluation Client computer is on the same internal LAN as your evaluation Server computer, use the Private IP Address of your evaluation Server computer.

If your evaluation Client will communicate with your evaluation Server over the Internet, use the Public IP Address of your evaluation Server computer.

If you do not know the IP address of the computer running the evaluation RBS Server software...

You'll have to find it. Use a browser on your RBS Server to browse to the RBS Web Site at http://remote-backup.com. Click the link in the Quick Links section (upper right part of the main web page) called What's My IP Address? This feature shows ONLY the Public IP Address of your computer - not its Private IP address.

The RBS Evaluation Software will install a folder containing a set of files you can use to install the Client software on another computer. After you have changed the IP address using the Client Database Utility you can simply copy this set of files to another computer (or to a CD) and install the client software by running the setup.exe file.

The Client's installation files can be found in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\RBS Server\Client

The Quick Way

If you have already installed the evaluation Client software on another computer, and it is unable to communicate with your Server. This is most often caused by an incorrect IP address - the Client is trying to contact the Server at the wrong IP address, probably the default 127.0.0.1 that the evaluation software ships with. We need to change it.

Select Options:Preferences

Make sure the Connection Type is set correctly. Look for the padlock icon and double-click it. Enter the case-sensitive password: Admin

Make sure the Port number is the same as your Server's. Change the Backup Server URL to the IP address or host name of your Server.

Click Apply

Answer either Yes or No at the next window. Right now it doesn't matter.

Click the Test Connection button. This indicates that your Client now has a proper connection with your Server.

If Test Connection fails, the most likely reason is that something is in the way between your Client and your Server - suspect a firewall, router, or other hardware and software outside RBackup.

Testing Your Evaluation Server

You can test your evaluation server to make sure it is functioning properly by using the Online Server Tester.

The Online Server Tester does not require a functioning evaluation Client, which makes it useful for isolating problems to either the Client or the Server.

Click the following link from any computer. You don't have to click it from your evaluation server or your evaluation client. Either or any computer will work. Please read the instructions for the tester.
